Get inspired - Don't miss your chance to
tour the "Greenest Home in Chicago!"

A modular home currently on exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is being used to demonstrate some of the latest innovations in smart energy consumption and healthy living.

The three-story, 2,500-square-foot home, built using seven factory-constructed
modules and located in a park east of the museum, demonstrates some of the
latest innovations in smart energy construction and healthy-living environments.

Called the mkSolaire™, the home features family-friendly interior architecture
and shows some of the possibilities and benefits of energy-efficient heating,
ventilation and air-conditioning systems and earth-friendly building materials.

The "Smart Home: Green + Wired" exhibit and home tours
run through Jan. 4th, 2009.
Some detailed information on the exhibit and home features is available on the museum's Web site by clicking here.

Installing Fiberglass Batt Insulation

For homebuilding pros and amateurs alike, installing fiberglass batt insulation probably sounds like a piece of cake (in relation to electrical wiring or plumbing, that is.) However, not taking the application seriously may sabotage the effectiveness of your home's insulation. Installing fiberglass batt insulation requires a very careful approach to ensuring a consistent installation without gaps or compression.

By paying close attention to just a few techniques, even a beginner can install batt insulation properly. Follow these steps:

1. Determine the size of batt and R-value needed for the wall. For example, an R-13 batt should be used for a 16 inch on center wall cavity. For information
about selecting insulation for new home construction, visit the Department of Energy's Building America website.  Or, click here to read more.

Properly Focused Technology Can Help Builders Survive

Weathering the downturn requires up-to-date information on every aspect of a builder's business operations to make the tough decisions on everything from
inventory, land, cash and staffing to even whether or not to stay in business.

In these difficult times, builders should seek out builder- and business-oriented technology that will enable them to gather and analyze information about their business operations, the market and prospective customers and their profitability so they can have a clear, comprehensive knowledge-base on which to base their decisions.

But in order for builders to take the actions necessary to survive and position their business for the market's eventual return, they have to first rethink the way they use the technology.  Click here to read more...
